Isles of Scilly Charitable Trust help struggling families survive through winter

The Isles of Scilly Charitable Trust were awarded with a grant of £2,000 from the Cornwall Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter Fund, enabling 20 local families, struggling due to fuel poverty, to help to keep warm over winter.

The Isles of Scilly is renowned for its natural beauty, laidback vibes, and clear waters, which is why it will come as no surprise that it’s the most popular holiday destination in the Duchy. But beyond it’s tropical appearance, the residents, like the majority of Cornwall, have been hit hard by the cost-of-living crisis and have found the winter months particularly hard with the increased energy bills and food costs.

The Surviving Winter Fund offers small grants to the people at most risk from the effects of winter, helping them to stay warm, active, and healthy.

Thanks to The Isles of Scilly Charitable Trust, who received funding from the Surviving Winter Fund in January 2024, many struggling families across the five Scilly islands have been given financial support to help with the costs of staying warm throughout the coldest winter months. Most households that will benefit from this funding will be pensioners and families with young children.

Even as inflation starts to fall in March 2024, bills are continuing to rise.  According to an Office for National Statistics (ONS) survey from February and March 2024, 46% of adults in Great Britain reported an increase in their cost of living compared to the previous month.

Cornwall Community Foundation would like to thank everyone who donated to our Surviving Winter Appeal, which made funding like this possible. Your generous donations have enabled us to help hundreds of families across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with the financial support they so desperately needed.
