Disability Cornwall preparing meals for vulnerable people

Disability Cornwall received £7,500 the Cornwall Emergency Fund to aid the purchase of food and containers for their new ‘Community Kitchen’, based at Hayle Rugby Club. This service delivers both hot and cold meals to vulnerable people in the community.

Disability Cornwall are delivering hot meals on Wednesdays & Saturdays to over 400 people, plus extra items donated to the group, including cakes, soup, seeds, basic food items, and even pictures drawn by local children.

They have around 20 volunteers making deliveries direct to vulnerable people’s homes. Their clients are so grateful, not only for the meals but also the friendliness of the volunteers who take the time to ask how the person is doing and can refer them to our free helpline for extra support if needed.

Jane Johnson, of Disability Cornwall, discussed the scheme which is far removed from the usual functioning of the group. “We aim to continue this for as long as it is needed and aim to bid for other small grants to enable us to continue do it if necessary.”
