Cornwall Council’s Housing Support funding improves the lives of struggling families
In July 2023, Trelya were awarded a grant from our Cost of Living Crisis Fund for Individuals which was supported by Cornwall Council’s Household Support funding.
Trelya works to improve the life outcomes for disadvantaged and socially excluded children and families. They work with those facing the greatest challenges, barriers and difficulties. Trelya is based in Penzance East which is the second most deprived community in Cornwall and in the top 1% for income deprivation in the entire country. 52% of children live below the poverty line.
The grant was distributed to 50 families who are experiencing poverty and in need of financial support. The grant was given out as £100 Tesco vouchers and used to purchase nutritious food, clothing and bedding. In total, this funding helped to support 167 people in the Penzance area. Trelya told us:
“We want to improve the lives of these families by ensuring they have the basic resources they need to thrive and for children to have the best chance of reaching their potential at academically, socially and emotionally. We also want to reduce vulnerability to exploitation and criminal offending for families who feel pressured to raise money illegally to buy food, pay bills and cover other basic necessities.”
